● Good news stories about the growing popularity of cycling in the US.

In recent days I have noticed good news stories about the growing popularity of cycling in the US from two different sources.

One is from the BBC, and it documents how the bicycle is making a comeback in US cities. For example, it reports that while the population of Washington has grown by over 600,000 in the last decade, there has been no corresponding increase in traffic because more people are walking and cycling.

The other story is in the Los Angeles Times and talks about the change in philosophy for promoting cycling is the US. Basically, it says that Americans are increasingly dropping the ‘vehicular cycling’ approach in favour of the European model, which focuses more on bike lanes and separate cycling infrastructure.

  1. good to see… would like to know what the % of cyclists riding to/from work in each state and province/city are.
That’s what really counts. For the less congestion during peak times, the more people save on taxes. its the peak times that really creates havoic on taxes (that includes energy usage – such as electricity for the wheel has to turn harder to accommodate the peak usage). during peak traffic, the masses come and clutter the roads, off peak times the roads are used maybe 10% to capacity… total waste of tax dollars.
