Big drop in cycling fatalities in the USA
For a second year in a row, there has been a major drop in cycling fatalities in the US. A recently released report by the US Department of Transportation indicates that 618 cyclists died in traffic accidents with vehicles in the States in 2010. In 2009, there were 628 deaths. Prior to this, the number had been hovering around 700 cycling fatalities per year.
These numbers may sound bad, but they are a huge improvement over the situation in 1975, when 1,003 cyclist died in traffic accidents (and in 1975, there were far fewer motorists and cyclists on American roads).
I was wondering what the trends might be for Canada. I did a half hearted internet search, but didn’t come up with much. I did find statistics for cycling fatalities in Ontario for 2004 to 2008 (see link below).
