The 2012 Rideau Lakes Tour in jeopardy?

There is a chance that the highly popular Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour may not take place in 2012, according to the Ottawa Bicycle Club website.  Apparently, no one has volunteered to head up the Rideau Lake Committee, and the club is now actively canvassing its members for someone to step forward to organize this event for 2012.

For people who are unfamiliar with the Rideau Lakes Tour, it has been around for 40 years and has become one of the region's premier cycling events. The tour takes place in June and involves 2000 cyclists who ride one of several routes between Ottawa and Kingston, and back, over a two-day period. Although the event is organized by the Ottawa Bicycle Club, it is open to non-members.

It is not altogether surprising that the Ottawa Bicycle Club is having difficulty finding someone to handle the Rideau Lakes Tour.  Organizing this weekend event is a massive undertaking. The tour is supported by 80 volunteers and arrangements had to be made to check in and out all the riders, staff several refreshment stations along the route, move baggage for participants between Ottawa and Kingston, and provide for meals and overnight accommodations in Kingston. All of this becomes a monumental task when it is being done for 2000 cyclists.
