Use an iPhone as a “power meter” to measure cycling  performance

In recent years power metres have emerged as the best way of measuring performance by gauging a cyclist’s energy output (in watts).

Until power meters came along, cyclists had to deduce their energy output with heart rate monitors or by simply trying to figure things out by looking at their speed and how hard they were pedalling. However, power meters can be very expensive - well over $1000 for some models,  plus high installation costs.

The good news is that it will soon be possible to buy an adapter that will allow people to use their iPhones as a power meter. While not exactly cheap,  they should be a lot less expensive than anything else on the market.
