150 new Bixi bikes & 15 new stations for Ottawa/Gatineau.

The bike-sharing program (Capital Bixi) in the Ottawa Gatineau area will be more than doubling its size for the coming summer.

Last year the Bixi bike program was an exclusive NCC initiative, and it operated with only 100 bike and 10 docking stations. This year the cities of Gatineau and Ottawa have decided to help support the program, making it possible to expand Capital Bixi with 150 new bikes and 15 new docking stations. This expansion means the program will operate with a total of 250 bikes and 25 docking stations for the coming summer.

While this is a significant improvement over last year, it still falls short of what is required to operate an effective bike sharing program. Many people believe the Ottawa Gatineau area would need an absolute minimum of 500 bicycles and 50 docking stations in order to obtain the critical mass required to operate a worthwhile bike sharing program. For example, to operate the program on the same scale as in Montreal,  proportionally, the Ottawa Gatineau area would have to have approximately 1000 bikes and 100 docking stations.
