Sunday Bikedays starts this weekend (May 20, 2012)
The Alcatel-Lucent Sunday Bikedays will start this coming Sunday (May 20, 2012) and continue throughout the summer until Labour Day Weekend. This means that every Sunday morning over 50 kilometres of NCC parkways in Ottawa and Gatineau Park will be closed to motorized traffic and reserved for cyclists, in-line skaters, runners, and pedestrians.
It’s worth noting that in many cities these types of road closures are now called "Ciclovías", which means "bike path" in Spanish. Apparently, Bogotá, Colombia, has been credited with kicking off the concept for Ciclovías when it started closing 13 kilometres of roads every Sunday morning in 1976. However, Sunday Bikedays road closures have been going on in the National Capital Region since 1970.
